The Alice in Chains is a famous grunge/alternative metal band hailing from the United States of America. Originating from Seattle and forming in 1987, this band has risen to much critical acclaim. In the grunge music circuit, this band is just as popular like bands such as Pearl Jam, Nirvana and Soundgarden. Yet, contrasting from other comparable bands, the music that has been produced by this group takes its inspiration greatly from the genre of heavy metal rather that psychedelic rock or punk rock.
 
The main music genres of the band comprise of alternative metal, alternative rock, grunge, hard rock and heavy metal. They were created in 1987 and have been actively involved in the music industry since then. They have successfully released ten albums out of which four are studio recorded albums, two live records and four collections. They have given some fabulous associated acts with musicians and groups such as Black Label Society, Neon Christ, Spys4Darwin, Comes with the Fall, Ozzy Osbourne, Sun Red Sun, Class of ’99, Mad Season, Slash’s Snakepit and Heart.
 
Alice in Chains is one of those bands in the industry today that is greatly known for its unique vocal style which is more than usual a harmony of the stunning vocals of Cantrell as well as Staley. The band rose t an immense amount of international popularity and was considered to be a part of the grunge movement that took place in the decade of the 1990s in conjunction with bands such as Soundgarden, Nirvana and Pearl Jam. In the 1990s, they were considered to be amongst the most successful music groups. They effectively sold more than 17 million albums of theirs all over the globe which comprised of selling 14 million copies just in the United States. They fruitfully achieved two number one hit albums of the popular Billboard 200 albums charts, (Alice in Chains and Jar of Flies), a whopping total of six Grammy Award nominations and twelve top ten singles on the acclaimed Mainstream Rock Tracks lists.
 
Even though the band never officially disbanded, yet it was plagued by a long hiatus because of substance abuse issues that Layne Staley, the lead vocalist of the band, had to face. This ultimately led to his death in 2002. In 2005, the band reunited and in 2009 they completed the recording of their first studio recorded album after fourteen years. The new lead vocalist of the band is William DuVall and the album which was released on the 29^th of September in 2009 is known as Black Gives Way to Blue. The album has been recorded on the Virgin/EMI Records.
 
Alice in Chains has had a huge impact on various music groups. Some of the popular mainstream groups such as Godsmack have been greatly inspired by the band while incorporating their own distinctive edge. So much so, that the name of the band, Godsmack has also been inspired by a song of the Alice in Chains group that was titled as “God Smack”. The music group called Staind has covered the famous song “Nutshell” which was originally by the band. Three Days Grace band has also performed on a cover song called “Rooster” by the band. Various other bands that have taken their inspiration from the group are Smile Empty Soul, Taproot, Cold, Puddle of Mudd as well as Tantric.
