Born Vincent Damon Furnier, Alice Cooper has been performing for four decades as a rock star. The theme of violence is as prevalent in his musical style as his performance style - he is considered the pioneer of this horror-sensibility associated with the genre. Ranked #20 on VH-1's list of 100 Greatest Rock Artists, Alice Cooper has made his mark in the arena of rock music.
Originally a band including Furnier as lead vocalist, Glen Buxton and Micael Bruce on guitar, Dennis Dunaway as bass-guitarist and Neal Smith as drummer, Alice Cooper became the stage-name of Furnier when he began his solo career in 1975. The band had made it big on the international music scene with hits such as "I'm Eighteen" which was part of their album Love it to Death. "School's Out," a single that followed, was an even bigger hit.
In 1973, Alice Cooper's Million Dollar Babies became a tremendous commercial success. Alice Cooper's solo acts began with his Welcome to my Nightmare, a concept album. Over the years Cooper has toyed with a plethora of genres. One can hear strains of art rock, new wave, hard rock, conceptual rock, experimental rock industrial rock and soft rock in his music. Alice Cooper's eighteenth solo album Along Came a Spider was released in 2008. Most recently, Alice Cooper has shown a stylistic inclination towards garage rock.
Alice Cooper is known for being quite personable and witty in his personal life, a fact that his stage-persona contradicts. He is heard reminding fans that he is only an entertainer who plays the character of Alice Cooper, the gore-obsessed, macabre performer (whose stagecraft has helped shape the genre). He finds solace in his Christian faith and espouses conservative values when he's not performing. Alice Cooper has appeared in films and also happens to be a restaurateur and a golf celebrity. Alice Cooper has been hosting Nights with Alice Cooper, a popular classic rock show on radio since 2004. The show features songs as well as celebrity talk, and has drawn a multitude of his fans.
Some of Alice Cooper's soundtracks include Class of 1984, Prince of Darkness, Friday the 13th Part VI: Jason Lives, Iron Eagle II and Wayne's World. Alice Cooper has recorded six live albums, twenty-five studio albums, twenty-one compilation albums, an audio book, twelve video games and fort-nine singles. Out of his studio albums, six have are certified platinum in the USA while two are certified gold. A new album is expected in 2010. Meanwhile, his performances are attracting huge crowds.
