Founded in 1930 by Italian-born conductor and Professor John F. Carabella, Albany Symphony Orchestra initially came to be known as People’s Orchestra of Albany, and is the oldest of professional symphonies orchestras from the Capital District of New York. Carabella was born in 1885 in Rome, and was a special student of Pietro Mascagni who was a famous composer of Cavalleria Rusticana. The artist came to the US in 1915 and became a choirmaster and organist in Cohoes’ St. Bernard’s Church. In addition, it featured the world premieres of many renowned performances that were commissioned pieces by composers like Michael Torke, Carolyn Yarnell, Michael Woods, Stephen Dankner, and Bun Ching Lam. On its seventy-seventh anniversary the orchestra featured the talented Joshua Bell in live performance, where the violinist played a violin concerto by Mendelssohn and a few selections from the celebrated West Side Story.
