Pacino’s parents divorced when he was two years old and he went to live with his mother and his grandparents.
Early in life Al Pacino aspired to be a baseball player, but also kept an interest in acting. He left his home and as a result, had to go through quite a tough time. He was essentially homeless and used to work several menial jobs like becoming a busboy and a janitor just to pay for his acting classes. He was rejected by the Actor’s Studio, the world renowned institute for actors. He didn’t give up and was accepted by the Herbert Berghof Studio. Here he met Charlie Laughton, a teacher, who would later become his close friend and mentor.
It took Pacino four years before he was finally accepted by the Actor’s Studio. Here, under the tutelage of actor Lee Strasberg, he learned the art of method acting. To this day, he credits the institute for giving his acting career the boost it needed.

The award and his acting prowess got him his first movie role, a small appearance in the film “Me, Natalie.” That led to further roles and his performance in the movie “The Panic in Needle Park” caught the attention of Francis Ford Coppola. Pacino was chosen to play Michael Corleone in a “The Godfather.” It turned out to be an all time classic and gave Al Pacino the break he had been looking for.
