His musical career which spans over some forty three years is studded with some of the greatest hits of our time. Sixties and seventies were the golden era for this star because that is when he gave hit songs like 'You Oughta Be With Me', 'Let's Stay Together', 'Love and Happiness' and 'I'm Still in Love with You'. His fantastic hits were the reason why Justin Timberlake thought that Al Green was born to 'make us smile'. His forty three year music career has been sheer delight for all his fans in particular and music lovers in general. In the mid 2000s, he was inducted in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Albert Greene was born in Forrest City. Some of the earliest education he received included intensive musical training as a part of which he began singing and forming with his gospel quartet by the name of Green Brothers. His natural talent earned him and his group much appreciation and he got the chance to travel around with his gospel group during the early years of his live. By the age of sixteen, Al Green has formed another group by the name of Al Green & the Creations. This band had several of his high school friends, two of which, went to have their own bands. Al Green & the Creations renamed t become Soul Mates. It was from the platform of this band that he gave his first hit 'Back Up Train'. It was this song that gave the Soul Mates their first position in the R & B charts in the late 1960s. A year later, Al Green met with Willie Mitchell, the vice president of Hi Records and was able to sufficiently impress him. This won him a prolific deal with Hi Records and he began recording his first album.
His deal with the Hi Records brought him success. Even though his initial albums with the record company were no major success but he did not lose heart. With the passage of time, he slowly managed to add his personal touch to the same and this seemed to work really well for him. Initially, he was trying too hard to sound like the famous artists of his time; he grew up listening to like Wilson Pickett, Jackie Wilson, Sam Cooke, James Brown etc. As soon as he stopped trying to sound like them, he shone like a star. The 1990s and the early 2000s brought him much success and fame. He gave many a terrific albums during this period and also won various awards and nominations. In 1995, he was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and was dubbed 'one of the most gifted purveyors of soul music.' Some seven years later, he won the highest honor in the form of the Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award.
