The French music group, Air consisting of Jean-Benoit Dunckel and Nicolas Godin was formed in 1995. Prior to its formation, Nicholas and JB were the members of another music group, Orange. The music of Air mainly includes electronica and is highly influenced by 1970s’ synthesizer sounds created by Francis Lai, Vangelis and Jean Michel Jarred. The duo also cites the pioneers of psychedelic rock music, Pink Floyd as their inspiration. Their variant sound of classical disco earned them popularity in dance and ambient genre. The music of Air also sometimes includes jazz elements. The band makes use of several instruments such as Moog synthesizers, Vocoder and Wurlitzer in its live performances, where the band’s ability to invent and explore new music is more highlighted. Air’s discography includes seven studio records, an extended play, a soundtrack album, and two video records. "Modular Mix", was the first song released by the duo in 1995 making it to the UK charts. Coming up with its debut record "Moon Safari" in 1998, Air received raved reviews from the critics and took the music lovers by storm. The record made its way to the Top 10 in countries like UK and Ireland. It featured three hit singles, "Sexy Boy", "All I Need" and "Kelly Watch The Stars". In 2001 another album "10,000 Hz Legend" was released, which was followed by a national tour. The record reached at number twelve in France. Singles such as "Do the Joy" and "Sing Sang Sung" from the album became famous. The members have also teamed up with Sofia Coppola; a film director in 2000 to compose the music for her debut movie, The Virgin Suicides. The band wrote as well as played the music of a French singer Charlotte Gainsbourg’s record "5:55" released in 2006. Air started City Reading in 2003 as a proposal for a team work with modern Italian author Alessandro Baricco, recognized for his extraordinary lyrics, characterizations and poetic style. The collaboration went successful with the live performance premiering in 2002 at Teatro Valle of Rome. The live event was recorded in the form of an album called City Reading: Tre Storie Western. The music of Air has also been regularly used in TV commercials. The song "Surfing on a rocket" was used in Nissan Armada commercial in 2005. "Playground Love" was featured in Levi’s jeans ad in 2002. Several tracks by Air are played in the background for "Top Gear"; a BBC show.
