Agalloch’s discography today consists of four EPs, four studio albums, two demo albums, one compilation album, one split album and one live DVD. Its history draws back to 1995. During this time, the band started out with Shane Breyer and John Haughm. The two artists began producing songs and were soon joined by Don Anderson. These songs were then released as part of a demo tape titled as From Which of This Oak, in reference to their name which is after the Latin name of the Agarwood tree. This demo tape was influenced heavily by black metal and its style would influence many albums to come. After its release, Jason William Walton joined the band as its bassist and it soon began working on more music.

By 1998, Agalloch had worked on a second demo tape, this time made specifically for record labels. It was then sent out and caught the attention of The End Records who offered the band a contract. Their first album, titled as Pale Folklore, was then released and it feature a lower black metal influence and a more folk and neoclassical music influence. It gained critical acclaim amongst fans of metal. In 2001, they released an EP titled as Of Stone, Wind and Pillor which contained a more experimental and neoclassical sound, including a cover of the song Kneel to the Cross by the famous neofolk group, Sol Invictus. This song was also released as part of a tribute to Sol Invictus by the record label Cynerfierrd with the album titled as Sol Lucet Omnibus.

In 2002, the album The Mantle was released and it contained a more post-rock sound. It was popular in mainstream circles and led to interviews by mainstream magazines as well, marking a new era of the band. In 2003, they performed their first ever live show in Portland and followed it up with several more shows and a tour of the west coast. The same year, the released the album Tommorow Will Never Come and in 2004, came out with The Grey. These two EPs were even more experimental and marked another turn in the band’s music. Alongwith Nest, a Finnish band, a split album was released in 2004 with members of the band also contributing to Nest’s album.

In 2006, Agalloch released the album Ashes Against the Grain followed by The White in 2008. Some of the songs of this album were inspired by the movie, The Wicker Man, and a song titled as Birch Tree by A S J Tessimond. In 2008, they also released a compilation album titled as The Demonstration Archive which was followed by a re-release of one of their earlier albums.
