They are also the hosts of Group Therapy Radio, a weekly radio show and their songs are played often by the biggest DJs in the world. DJs themselves, they have been ranked eighth on the Top 100 DJ Poll by DJ Magazine, in 2012.
The group was founded when Paavo Siljamaki and Jono Grant were studying Electronic Engineering at the University of Westminste. Fond of electronic music, they began writing music and then founded the Anjunabeats record label in 1999.
They released their first song, Volume One, through the label and went on to release music under different names, attracting the attention of such famous DJs as Paul van Dyk, Pete Tong, Judge Jules and Paul Oakenfold. They soon attracted the attention of Tony McGuinness of Warner Music Group, who hired them to remix a Chakra song. The band adopted the name Above And Beyond for their group. Their Chakra remix gained much popularity with airplays on BBC Radio 1. It was ranked first on the UK Club chart. Having caught the interest of the trance music community, they began working on a number of remixes.
Their remix of Madonna’s song, What It Feels Like for a Girl was loved by Madonna who decided to record her music video to the remix rather than the original. They went on to remix songs for Ayumi Hamasaki, a Japanese pop artist, and Three Drives and also collaborated with Andy Moor, Zoe Johnston and Richard Bedford. By 2004, they had released remixes of songs by Tomcraft, Britney Spears, Delerium, Dido and Motorcycle. Madonna even asked them to remix her famous song, Nobody Knows me.
In 2006, they released their first album, titled Tri-State. It received five star reviews from the likes of DJ Mag and its songs won such awards as the Best Underground Dance Track at the Miami Winter Music Conference. The song Air For Life was also voted the Tune of the Year on Armin van Buuren’s A State of Trance. Several more singles won awards with the album ranking fifth in the UK Dance Chart.
Their next album was released in 2010 and labeled Group Therapy. It ranked first on the iTunes Dance Album chart. DJ Magazine featured them and dubbed them the Biggest DJ collective the UK has ever produced. The album had several songs featuring Zoe Johnston and Richard Bedford.
To date, they have released three studio, two remix albums, nineteen compilation albums, over fifty singles and many more remixes. For lovers of trance music, Above And Beyond tickets are available for the group’s shows.
