‘Over you’ is one of the first singles from Aaron to have received airplay outside his homeland of New Orleans. However the beginning of his popularity is credited to the famous single called ‘Tell it like it is’. The number topped the US Billboard’s R&B charts for a consistent five weeks. It also ranked on the second spot of the US Hot 100. The track sold more than a million copies and was eventually declared Gold. Later its remake was covered by another rock band, which again stood amongst the top ten pop hits of the time.
In 1989 the musician collaborated with Linda Ronstadt to produce three back to back duets for her record ‘Cry like a Rainstorm, Howl like the Wind’. Two of these duet numbers namely ‘Don’t know much’ and ‘All my life’ won them the prestigious Grammy Awards and topped all Adult Contemporary music charts. ‘Don’t know much’ went on to be declared Gold while the record received a triple platinum for having made over three million sales across the nation.
One of his major hits includes ‘Everybody plays the fool’ which was a cover song of the 1972 number ‘Main Ingredient’. The track peaked at number eight on the US Hot 100. Amongst other solo musical contributions of the artist are ‘Hercules’, the rain song ‘Can’t stop my heart from loving you’ and ‘Don’t take away my heaven’. All of these made a considerable impression on the Adult Contemporary music countdowns.
Eight years ago in 2005, the singer signed a contract with Song BMG’s Burgundy Records. Under the label Aaron recorded a collection of songs by famous music artists like Sam Cooke, Otis Redding, Curtis Mayfield and Marvin Gaye. It was released under the title ‘Bring it home …The Soul Classics’. The record’s lead single was a remake version of the classic 1963 song, ‘It’s all right’. It also consists of Aaron’s collaborations with other musicians including Mavis Staples, Chris Botti, Art Neville, Chaka khan and David Sanborn.
Besides a studio artist, Aaron’s work of art encompasses his contributions to the celluloid as well as his live performances at sports events. He was chosen to recite the anthem at the WWF SummerSlam 1993 and the following year at WCW Spring Stampede. The musician also lent his voice to the television series called ‘Fisher-Price Little People’. He sang Cotton Incorporated’s new version of the title song ‘Cotton’. The number was first presented at the Summer Olympics event of 1992. Neville was one of the selected artists to record for ‘Stay Awake: Various Interpretations of Music from Vintage Disney Films’. The New Orleans native has also had the opportunity to perform alongside Dr John and Aretha Franklin at the Super Bowl XL that took place in Detroit.
Neville has also worked as a backing vocalist contributing the same to various songs including ‘My Barracuda’, ‘Bring Back the Magic’, ‘Great Heart’ and ‘Homemade Music’. One of the popular of such tracks is ‘Smart Woman’ which featured in Jimmy Buffett’s movie ‘Hot Water’.
In 2006, the singer made an appearance in one of the episodes of ‘The Young and the Restless’. He was also featured at the hundred year celebration event at the University of Memphis Centennial.
Whether it is his contributions as part of the Neville Brothers, his collaborations with other music artists or his recent most solo endeavors, Aaron Neville has been recognized and praised for all areas of music production he has ventured in.
