AC/DC is a band that displays sheer musical muscle as they rock on stage, driving the crowds wild. Their fans are certainly "thunderstruck" as they feel the power of AC/DC's thundering heavy metal/hard rock music.  With all the booming, one would think that AC/DC would veer out of control, musically speaking, but they don't. The lead vocalist has an iron voice that anchors and directs the song. Named AC/DC after the commonly used abbreviation for Alternating Current/ Direct Current, the band is known to electrify fans at a live concert.


Formed in Sydney, Australia in 1973, AC/DC is considered to be among the pioneers of the genre Heavy Metal, but curiously they prefer to define themselves as Rock ‘n Roll. The founding members of the band were two Scottish brothers Malcolm and Angus Young. The original line-up shuffled around quite a bit before the release of the first album in 1975, called High Voltage. Four years later, AC/DC came up with the famous album Highway to Hell. The song "Highway to Hell" is considered a classic in its genre. The celebration of this success was cut short and AC/DC almost disbanded after Bon Scott was claimed by an untimely death in 1980 due to an overdose of alcohol. Despite this tragedy, they were soon back on their feet recording Back in Black, which eventually sold 45 million albums and ranked as the fifth most selling album in the United States. The success of this album was followed by yet another highly acclaimed album For Those About to Rock We Salute You. It was their first to hit number one in the United States.


Over the decades AC/DC has come to be known as a Rock legend, selling over 200 million albums worldwide. AC/DC ranked fourth on the VH1's list of "100 Greatest Artists of Hard Rock." Their 1988 Blow Up Your Video sold a record number of albums, reaching #2 on the UK charts and featuring the UK Top Twenty single "Heatseeker" along with other hits such as "That's the Way I Rock and Roll." They released their song "Big Gun" as a single and it became their first #1 hit on the US Mainstream Rock chart after having been part of the soundtrack of the Arnold Schwarzenegger movie Last Action Hero.

AC/DC's flux of band members in the ‘80s had led to a temporary fizzling out of their popularity but they recovered with Blow Up Your Video, and later with their 1995 album Ballbreaker. AC/DC were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2003 and the same year they were honored with a Ted Albert Award for "Outstanding Service to Australian Music." MTV named AC/DC the seventh "Greatest Heavy Metal Band of All Time." Their millennium album was called Stiff Upper Lip.


In 2004, the Rolling Stone List ranked AC/DC as #72 in the Rolling Stone list of the "100 Greatest Artists of All Time." AC/DC's most recent album Black Ice which came out in 2008 has had a superb response, boosting the success of their Black Ice World Tour. Well into their third decade as a band, AC/DC continues to enjoy the status of being among the top Rock ‘n Rollers!
