Michelle LaVaughn Robinson Obama was born in Chicago, Illinois on January 17, 1964 to Fraser Robinson III and Marian Shields Robinson. She was an intelligent girl growing up and was enrolled in Whitney Young High School which is Chicago’s first magnet high school. Obama then began to think about pursuing a career as a lawyer and got admission at the Harvard Law School from where she earned her Juris Doctor (J.D.) degree in 1988.
Meeting Barack Obama
After law school, Michelle Obama joined the Chicago office of the law firm, Sidley & Austin as an associate and began working on marketing and intellectual property law. It was there that she met Barack Obama when he was hired as a summer intern. She became his advisor and soon they both felt a connection so strong that they started a relationship. After spending two years dating, Barack Obama proposed and the couple tied knot on October 3, 1992 at the Trinity United Church of Christ. Today, the Obamas have two beautiful daughters, Malia Obama and Sasha Obama who were born in 1998 and 2001 respectively.
A Career In Public Service
In 1991, Michelle Obama began to think about improving the wellbeing of the people living in Chicago which is what persuaded her to quit her job. She then began a career in public services and soon became an assistant to the Mayor of that time, Richard Daley. She also began working as Assistant Commissioner of Planning and Development of Chicago. Two years later, Obama was made Executive Director for the Chicago office of Public Allies where she worked for almost four years and established fund-raising records which stood for twelve years even after she had left.
Michelle Obama then joined the University of Chicago as the Associate Dean of Student Services in 1996 and helped develop the campus’s Community Service Center. In 2002, she became an Executive Director for Community Affairs at the University of Chicago Hospitals and was later appointed as the Medical Center’s Vice President for Community and External Affairs in 2005. She continued to work till her husband, Barack Obama became the 44th President of the United States.
The First Lady
Michelle Obama did a lot as the First Lady of the United States.
