54 40 is a Canadian music group and their music is described as alternative rock. The name of the band is taken from the slogan, "Fifty-Four Forty or Fight!", which was used to express the failed attempt of president James K. Polk’s expansionist agenda, the purpose of which, was to control the contested border area between the United States and Canada in the Oregon boundary dispute. The band 54 40, started with a recording in a compilation album that featured four tracks. This independent compilation LP contained songs from Vancouver based bands such as Junco Run and Animal Slaves. The compilation was called Things Are Still Coming Ashore.
Aside from this, 54 40 released the EP Selection during the same year. It was in the year 1986, when the band released their self titled album, that they received major attention from radio listeners and record purchasers all around Canada. Their music was new and fresh, which managed to catch people’s attention very quickly, especially with the track, Baby Ran. Success continued for the band as they released their third album, Show Me. This album became a commercial hit in Canada with great hit tracks like One Gun and One Day in Your Life.
The band had terrific success throughout their career. An example of this success can be described by one of their track called, I Go Blind that became part of the first OST (Official Sound Track) for the extremely popular and hit American Television sitcom called Friends. Even the American music band Hootie & the Blowfish performed the cover version of this song. It was through such royalties from the American Band, which helped the group in building their very own recording studio in Vancouver, Canada. This highly popular track can be heard on one of the band’s compilation albums called Scattered, Smothered and Covered as well as Hootie & the Blowfish’s compilation album titled, The Best of Hootie & the Blowfish (1993 Thru 2003).
It has been more than 25 years since the band’s first commercial album was released and nearly 30 plus years since it was formed.
