About the Band
The band was first formed as Still Life in 1981 in New York and had Dennis Drew on keyboards, Chet Cardinate on drums, Steven Gustafson on bass, Teri Newhouse on vocals and Robert Buck on guitars. Soon, Natalie Merchant was invited to join the group as a vocalist and John Lombardo, who at the time was part of another group, was also invited to join Still Life permanently. After some more lineup changes, Merchant ended up becoming the lead singer of the group. The name Still Life was first changed to Burn Victims and then eventually to the current name, 10000 Maniacs. The name was inspired by a low-budget movie, Two Thousand Maniacs.
The band first started out by playing covers. Their first hit single in the country was also a cover of Cat Stevens “Peace Train”. But before long, 10000 Maniacs began working on their own original music. In 1982, the group finally got around to recording their debut EP, called Human Conflict Number Five. After performing a few informal gigs around town, the group started working on their second musical compilation. Secrets of the I Ching was 10000 Maniac’s first full length album, released by Mark Records.
The album left quite a positive impact on music critics and was widely well-received. Following the release of this album, the group toured extensively and even played gigs in the UK.
After getting noticed by a member of Leak and Elektra Records, 10000 Maniacs got signed on to their first major label, Elektra Records.
Even though the band’s first major label album, The Wishing Chair, was not a major hit, it did lay the groundwork for what was to come in the future. The second album released by 10000 Maniacs under Elektra, In My Tribe, helped the group gain a notable amount of popularity, remaining on the charts for 77 weeks.
But the group’s major breakthrough can be associated with the 1989 album, Blind Man’s Zoo, which went gold and reached No. 13 on the charts.
More Music and Successes
Since then, 10000 Maniacs has released a number of albums. Their 1992 album, Our Time in Eden, peaked at number 28 in the US and at number 33 in the UK. It also went double platinum in the US.
