St Gallen is a small city that is situated on the eastern side of Switzerland at an altitude of about 675 meters. The average population of the town is around 80,000. The history of this city dates back to the year 612 AD and first settler was an Irish monk by the name of Gallus. It was Gallus who built the first hermitage in the city. In the year 720 a priest named Othmar built the Abbey of St. Gall which went on to become a hallmark. After undergoing the rules of various kings the city finally became a part of the Old Swiss confederation in 1454.
St. Gall church is famously known as Convent of St Gall and since 1983 it is listed in the UNESCO World Heritage. The church interior is designed in a baroque finish with colorful arches and paintings. It has the famous Abbey Library that is the oldest library in the country and one of the earliest and most important monastic libraries of the world.
