It is known that, during its very early history, the area that is now Sacramento was a Native American settlement. The area was later discovered sometime during the start of the 19th century by Gabriel Moraga, a Spanish explorer. He then named the valley, as well as the river running through it, Sacramento, after the Holy Sacrament of the Eucharist in the Catholic faith. Sacramento would eventually become a city much later in the 1800s due to the work of the father and son duo of John Sutter Sr. and John Sutter Jr. – who were Swedish immigrants – and the efforts of James W. Marshall. The city was planned by Sutter Jr. after an influx of outsiders poured into the area during the California Gold Rush. Thereon, the city began to grow and became a center of agriculture and trade, a terminus for the telegram as well as many modes of transport like wagon trains, riverboats and the First Transcontinental Railroad. And in 1879, Sacramento was named the permanent capital of the state of California.
In present times, the city is the center of all cultural and economic activity within the seven counties of the Sacramento metropolitan area. Sacramento is also the thirty-fifth largest city in America and the sixth-largest city in California, with a population of 472,178. Because of its vibrant history, the city also has a number of landmarks and sights. These include Old Sacramento, a charming remnant of the early period of the city’s history with cobbled streets and historically significant buildings. Sacramento also has a thriving cultural heart, with many events taking place throughout the year at venues like the Sacramento Convention Center Complex and the California Musical Theatre. Popular landmarks of the city include the Crocker Art Museum - the oldest and best art museum anywhere on the west of the Mississippi River – and Governor's Mansion State Historic Park, a Victorian era mansion.
Sacramento has warm, dry weather for a large part of the year and is also home to some of the finest universities in America, such as California State University, Sacramento. It was once voted the most racially integrated city in America by Time and is currently one of the country’s best cities. The city has a proud history and a lively cultural heart. Sacramento tickets are now widely available for those who wish to visit the history city.
