Venues of Glendale
Glendale was founded in the late 1800s by William John Murphy in order to sell land and water rights to escape crippling debts. Slowly immigrants and migrants began settling in the area whose appeal was bolstered by the formation of a railway and the construction of the Beet Sugar Factory.
The city houses several historic buildings and sites, many of which have been listed on the National Register of Historic Places. These include the Thunderbird Army Airfield which trained allied pilots during World War II, the Sahuaro Ranch, Manistee Ranch, The Forney House (second oldest house in Glendale) and the building of the Beet Sugar Factory.
The city has a vibrant culture and hosts several festivals throughout the year. The most notable festivals are the Glendale Chocolate Festival which is hosted every February, Glendale Glitters which is held around Christmas time in December and the historic Glendale Jazz and Blues Festival.
However, Glendale is perhaps most famous for its affiliation with sports. The city has three major sports venues; the Gila River Arena which is home to the NHL’s Arizona Coyotes, the University of Phoenix Stadium which is home to the NFL’s Arizona Cardinals and Camelback Ranch, the spring training home of the MLB’s Los Angeles Dodgers and the Chicago White Sox.
The University of Phoenix Stadium stands out among these because it is one of the most technologically advanced sports venues in the country, mainly due to its roll out natural grass feature. In 2008, the stadium hosted the Super Bowl XLII and in 2015 it is slated to hold the Super Bowl XLIX.
