The history of Eureka Springs can be traced to the days of Native Americans when there was a legend going around about a mythical spring that could heal people. That turned into a huge attraction for a lot of Europeans as well and they soon began to make their way to Eureka Springs in big numbers. It was however Dr. Alvah Jackson who is said to be the first man to locate the spring and claim that the water of the legendary spring really did help patients with eye problems.
Dr. Jackson then created a hospital nearby and word began to spread about the spring water’s healing power. The hype reached its peak when a judge, J.B. Saunders, said that he was healed by the water. The village started generating a lot of headlines that swelled its population tremendously. It was officially given the status of a city in 1880. A railroad was then built after that and played a big part in giving the city’s tourism a tremendous boost.
The construction of buildings in those days was based on the Victorian Architecture which can still be seen in historical buildings around the city. The Crescent Hotel became a part of its landscape in 1886 with the Basin Park Hotel joining in the year 1905. That started the construction of other monuments and buildings that have been preserved till today. Eureka Springs has public as well as private schools and plays host to famous events like May Festival of the Arts, Eureka Springs Food & Wine Festival, Eureka Springs Gras Mardi Gras Extravaganza, May Festival of the Arts and Halloween Festival that are held on annual basis.
Eureka Springs has been rated among the Top 25 Arts Towns in America by the American Style Magazine. The city made it to the National Register of Historic Places in 1970 and then to the list of Nationally Significant in the year 2004. There are over sixty natural springs and the park areas cover a whopping eighteen hundred acres of land. It also is home to one of the biggest hand-cut dams in the country. Add a state-of-the-art transportation system to the mix and it gets even more perfect. The city invites you to experience its history and at the same time offers you to enjoy the modern day lifestyle. It is a combination too good to resist.
