Del Mar is a beach city which is located in California. A part of the San Diego County, this beach town has a mere population of around five thousand residents. Its name has a Spanish origin which roughly translates to "by the sea" and this name was kept as the town lies on the Pacific Ocean. Covering a total area of 1.8 square miles out of which approximately 0.07 square miles is water, this small town is a hot spot for tourists during the mild summer temperatures.
At the moment, the city is under the mayorship of Don Mosier who brings in hundreds of tourists due to the numerous attractions the town constitutes of. Some of these attractions include Torrey Pines Golf Course that offers one of the most challenging courses in America, the Del Mar Racetrack that is located on the Del Mar Fairgrounds, the San Diego County Fair, the Torrey Pines State Beach and The Del Mar Antique Show. One of the most awaited upcoming events that will take place in this small town is the Del Mar Thoroughbred Racing Competition that is scheduled to be held at the Racetrack. The Racetrack is a horse racing track which is currently owned by the Thoroughbred Club. With the slogan that says "Where the Turf Meets the Surf", this racing track was inaugurated back in the year 1937. Several sponsors who contributed to the track’s establishment include actors Jimmy Durante, Pat O’Brien, Bing Crosby, Oliver Hardy and Charles S. Howard.
The track features a one mile long dirt track along with a seven turf furlong course. The Racetrack can also provide stable space for over a thousand horses, making it one of the largest horse racing tracks throughout America. Regular races are inaugurated in the month of July and they run throughout three months ending in September. Races are graded on a five grade category system that include Grade 1 that consists of the Bing Crosby Handicap, Debutante Stakes, Pacific Classic Stakes, Eddie Read Handicap and John C. Mabee Handicap, Grade 2 that constitutes of Best Pal Stakes, Derby, Mile Handicap, San Diego Handicap, Pat O’Brien Handicap and La Jolla Handicap. Grade 3 consists of Cougar II Handicap, Rancho Bernardo Handicap and Sorrento Stakes, Ungraded Stakes that constitutes of Adoration Stakes, Green Flash Handicap, Ej Cajon Handicap, Oceanside Handicap and Windy Sands Handicap and Discontinued Stakes that includes Cabrillo Handicap and Junior Miss Stakes.
