Fancy a weekend going to the Frankie Valli and the Four Seasons concert? This group achieved international fame as a rock and roll act in the mid 1960s. They are known as Frankie Valli and The Four Seasons since 1967 though their records do not display the name as such. It was in 1960 that the group The Four Seasons evolved from its previous name The Four Lovers. The lead vocalist was Frankie Valli, Bob Gaudio was the keyboardist and tenor vocalist, Nick Massi was the bass-guitarist and bass-vocalist, and lastly Tommy DeVito was the baritone vocalist and lead guitarist.
Founded by Valli and Gaudio, the organization is known as the Four Seasons Partnership. Both Gaudio and Valli have remained with the group constantly, but the singers, musicians and producers have been joining and departing. Valli is the only surviving member of the group who is presently touring with them. The group has sold 175 million records globally and is one of the best-selling musical bands of all time. The group was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1990 and was also initiated into the Vocal Group Hall of Fame in 1999.
Frankie Valli debuted with his music career by releasing "My Mother's Eyes" (1953). A year later, he founded the Variatones with the support of Tommy DeVito. The group comprised Frank Cattone (accordion), Hank Majewski (rhythm guitarist) and Billy Thompson (drummer) and delivered various performances between 1954 and 1956 with continuous revisions of names, finally calling themselves The Four Lovers.
Their first record "You're the Apple of My Eye" was released the same year and peaked at #62. The group released five singles under the same band name but will little commercial success. The seventh single released by the group met with similar failure. The group stayed together from 1956 until 1960 delivering performances in lounges and clubs as The Four Lovers. Various names were used for several record labels by them. Some of the names from their 18 "stage names" are Frankie Valley, Frankie Valle and the Romans, Frankie Tyler, Frankie Valley and the Travelers, The Topics and The Village Voices.
Producer Bob Crewe joined hands with the group in 1958. The same year, the Royal Teens were performing in the same venue as the Four Lovers. The former was a celebrated group then due to the success of their single "Short Shorts" that was co-scripted by Bob Gaudio who just 15 years old then was the guitarist of the group. Gaudio was recruited in the lineup of the Four Lovers substituting Nick DeVito and started playing both guitar and keyboard. Some other changes also took place but the fortunes of The Four Lovers remained the same. Composer/keyboardist/guitarist Bob Gaudion and lead vocalist Frankie Valli formed a partnership eventually and decided to name their band the Four Seasons after a bowling alley to bring some spark.
The first song by the Four Seasons was released in 1961 but it failed to chart. They released their first album with the single "Sherry" that was a tremendous hit. It was not just their first chartered hit but went down as their first number-one single. "Sherry" was tailed by numerous million-selling hits like "Candy Girl". "Walk Like a Man", "Big Girls Don't Cry", "Ain't That a Shame" and several others. This was the start of success for the Four Seasons and they have never looked back.
