During the early and late 80s, it was nothing more than an underground music phenomenon which was created as a result of fusion of various music genres like punk rock, hardcore punk, post punk and New Wave. Nurtured in the garages of United States and United Kingdom, the genre struggled to make an impression on the critics of music for quite some time. It was not until the early 1990s when the truly reached out to masses and created a solid fan base for the first time.

In a time when everybody was trying to copy whatever was getting popular at that time bands like Default, Puddle of Mud, R.E.M., Staind, Nickelback, Creed and Nirvana brought forward a sound that was truly unique and original at the same time. For originality, all the bands get full marks. It is really unfortunate that this genre of music has not gotten the attention it deserved. Some of the most popular alternative bands are Nirvana, Pearl Jam, Alive in Chains and Green Day.
