A doctoral of law (LLD) or doctoral of judicial science (SJD) can be obtained from a number of colleges around the country. Most doctoral programs are designed in an executive fashion, allowing working professionals to study online or take classes in the evenings and on weekends. PhD candidates start off by taking courses in legal theory, legal ethics, comparative law, corporate and contract law, strategy management, legal protection, and mediation, presentation and argumentation techniques. This is followed by a detailed research or dissertation on a pressing issue in law and the legal system. The final step is a public defense, where the candidate is required to justify his or her research methods and findings.
